What is Edge of Insanity and Far Beyond Driven?

As we hinted earlier, both of these supplements are stimulant-based products by Psycho Pharma. Where Edge of Insanity is the pre workout and Far Beyond Driven is the fat burner.

But what actually makes these supplements good for the gym or weight loss?

The answer is in the ingredients! While many ingredients are multi-purposeful, there are several ingredients that are distinct for specific item categories. For example, fat burners often have thermogenic and appetite suppressing properties, as well as increasing your energy. But when it comes to a pre workout, we can’t just have stimulants (even though it’s usually what people like). That’s why Edge of Insanity has a whole other blend for improved endurance and pumps.

Edge of Insanity and Far Beyond Driven: Original Formulas

OG Edge of Insanity VS Far Beyond Driven

As you can see in the labels above, these formulas are nearly identical. The only ingredients different are those that are specific for pre workouts!

The shared ingredients include:

  • Panthergy™ N-Methylpentyl-Iminoglutaric Acid
  • Caffeine Anhydrous
  • Synephrine HCl
  • Halostachine
  • Theobromine
  • Octopamine HCl
  • N-Methyl L-Tyramine HCl
  • Rauwolfia Vomitoria Root Extract

Panthergy™ N-Methylpentyl-Iminoglutaric Acid

Our first ingredient, Panthergy™  doesn’t have a lot of research on it. This makes identifying what it is and what is would be beneficial for difficult. However, when it was first introduced, it was marketed as a stimulant that supported focus, mood, and energy.† Some users had speculated this ingredient may be a form of glutamic acid, a metabolite for many neurotransmitters in the brain. (1) While other users believed it may be a different name for AMP Citrate (also known as DMBA or 1,3-dimethylbutylamine), a banned DMAA-like stimulant. (2

Caffeine Anhydrous

Caffeine is a stimulant you see in almost every fat burner and pre workout. It also can be listed as a bunch of different names, but Caffeine Anhydrous is the most common in supplements. Because caffeine is a stimulant, it has multiple purposes that can benefit both pre workouts and fat burners. This can include increasing the release of stored fat cells and promoting the calorie burning. As well as promoting energy, cognitive performance, and suppressing appetite. (3,4,5,6,7)

Checkout our blog on Ephedra and Ephedrine!

Synephrine HCl

Synephrine HCl is another stimulant ingredient which is similar to ephedrine, a regulated stimulant used medicinally. (8,9) This stimulant may also be a strong appetite suppressant. Synephrine works by acting like natural adrenaline when ingested. This helps increase metabolism and boost energy without increasing blood pressure. (10)

Halostachine

Halostachine or N-methylphenylethanolamine is another stimulant in these formulas. This compound is also structurally similar to ephedrine, though there isn’t as much research indicating its benefits.(11,12)

Theobromine

Theobromine, like caffeine, is a naturally occurring stimulatory compound found in cacao plants and tea leaves. Since it is a stimulant, it helps to support energy and may help shed water weight. Like other stimulants, theobromine also has appetite suppressing properties. (13)

Octopamine HCl

Octopamine is another alkaloid found alongside Synephrine. It can be seen in supplements as Octopamine or Bitter Orange Extract among other names. Aside from boosting energy, octopamine helps promote fat burning by inhibiting the uptake of glucose in fat cells (adipocytes) by blocking the beta-3 adrenoceptor. (14)

N-Methyl L-Tyramine HCl

N-Methyl L-Tyramine HCl similarly is found in Bitter Orange and other plants. It may share fat burning properties like Octopamine, but research indicates this ingredient may enhance appetite. (15)

Rauwolfia Vomitoria Root Extract

Rauwolfia Vomitoria is our last shared ingredient and to no surprise it also has stimulatory properties. This ingredient is often standardized for rauwolscine and referred to as “alpha yohimbine”. Where alpha yohimbine may be a stronger version of yohimbine.† Yohimbine itself is an alpha-2 antagonist, meaning that it stimulates adrenaline and noradrenaline receptors. This can result in appetite suppression, improving energy and focus, and fat mobilization. (16, 17) But, what makes Rauwolfia Vomitoria special is that it doesn’t raise blood pressure. In fact, it was actually used to treat hypertension. (18)

Edge of Insanity: PSYCHO Endurance, Vascularity, & Pumps Blend

From the label you can see that the ingredients remaining are all from Edge of Insanity.

This includes:

  • Beta Alanine
  • L-Arginine Alphaketoglutarate (AAKG)
  • Agmatine Sulfate

Beta Alanine

Beta alanine is a non-essential amino acid that research indicates may help improve exercise performance. It is often associated with a pins and needles/tingling sensation called paranesthesia. Beta alanine acts as a buffer for lactic acid build up in our muscles. Lactic acid builds up in our muscles when we workout, causing the “burn” effect. With beta alanine, this effect is delayed. Allowing you to continue your workout. (19)

AAKG

Arginine is going to convert to nitric oxide, as a result, we get an increase in blood flow and better pumps (20). There are claims that AAKG may be better absorption†. However, there is not enough research comparing these two ingredients to support this.

Agmatine Sulfate

Agmatine is a metabolite of to Arginine. Current research suggests it may promote nitric oxide (NO) synthesis better than arginine, as well as aid in proper regulation of cellular energy. This makes agmatine sulfate a popular pump-inducing ingredient, but further research is needed on this ingredient (21,22).

What Changed In 2019?Edge of Insanity VS Far Beyond Driven (2019)

In this revision, we can see the majority of heavy-hitter stimulants have been removed. This includes:

  • Panthergy™ N-Methylpentyl-Iminoglutaric Acid
  • Synephrine HCl
  • Halostachine
  • Octopamine HCl
  • N-Methyl L-Tyramine HCl

From Edge of Insanity, we can see there was a substitution of AAKG to Glycerpump. We can also see that Edge of Insanity was upgraded to a fully disclosed label, allowing us to compare the volume if each ingredient. As far as the blends go, Far Beyond Driven increased in volume of active ingredients per serving by ~9mg and Edge of Insanity increased by ~172mg in the endurance blend and ~381mg in the focus blend.

In this updated formula, there are 5 ingredients shared between both products:

Comparison: Shared Ingredients in 2019

Of which, only two are different from the previous formula, Theophylline Anhydrous and Yohimbine HCl. Yohimbine is a great thermogenic that is similar to Rauwolfia Vomitoria. Because of their similarities, they may function in the same way. This can mean promoting energy, focus, and fat loss. (16, 17)

Theophylline is similar to other ingredients that are used medicinally, but may play a role in weight loss. Medicinally, like ephedrine, it is used as a bronchodilator for treatment of asthma. (23) In terms of weight loss, may increase energy expenditure as significantly as ephedrine. (24)

Section Divider:

How Were They Different:

The ingredients aren’t the only thing that separates these products as you can imagine. Although they both consists of prop blends, Edge of Insanity contains more mg of active ingredients per serving. Of course this can be entirely due to it having more ingredients, but we can’t be sure. However, Far beyond Driven has more servings per container. You can take up to 2 caps, which would even out the servings. But if you find 1 cap is all you need, then you have a 2 month supply per bottle.

The ingredients that are different between these products in Far Beyond Driven:

  • Phenibut
  • Green Tea Extract
  • L-Theanine
  • Guarana Seed Extract

Phenibut

Phenibut is really more common in sleep aids due to it’s relaxing effects. But that’s not all it has to offer. Phenibut may also be great for improving mood and can aid in increasing focus. †

Green Tea Extract

There is a ton of research on Green Tea’s effect on weight loss. Some of the more recognized benefits include: (25)

  • Improving your body’s efficiency at burning calories
  • Improve exercise performance
  • Reduce visceral (belly fat) and inflammation

L-Theanine

Theanine is considered an anti-stress amino acid, often noted as a relaxation without sedation. But, when combined with Caffeine, there may be a synergistic effect. Research suggests that this combination may promote heightened focus, awareness, and energy. (26)

Guarana Seed Extract

While Guarana Seed Extract has it’s own set of benefits, it’s also standardized to 22% caffeine. So you’re getting the fat burning effects through this mechanism. (27)

Section Divider:

And the ingredients that are different in Edge of Insanity:

  • Beta Alanine
  • Glycerpump
  • Agmatine Sulfate
  • Kanna Extract
  • Bioperine

Kanna Extract

Kanna Extract is an interesting new ingredient. Much like Phenibut, its intended to improve cognition. This may in return, aid in focus. But, we wouldn’t be able to compare these ingredients just yet. We’d need more customer feedback and research on both. (28,29)

Glycerpump

Glycerol can help promote the prevention of dehydration, improved exercise performance, and increased muscular pumps. (30)

Bioperine

Bioperine may help increase the bioavailability of the other ingredients within this formula. But also may have it’s own thermogenic properties. (31)

Section Divider:

How Do They Compare in 2021

edge of insanity and far beyond driven in 2021

In the latest revision, we can see the both formulas are now fully disclosed and once again share nearly all it’s ingredients again. However, there were ingredients removed too.

This includes:

  • Phenibut
  • Green Tea Extract
  • Theophylline
  • L-Theanine
  • Guarana Seed Extract
  • Kanna Extract
  • Bioperine
  • Glycerpump
  • Agmatine Sulfate

So in 2021, 5 ingredients are shared between these product, but only 2 are consistent with the original formula, Caffeine and Rauwolfia Vomitoria. Outside of the actual ingredients, the volumes of active ingredients per blend also changed. Far Beyond Driven now has a blend of ~609mg of active ingredients compared to ~744mg. However, this is with a serving size of 2 caps, meaning, if you took only 1 cap you would be getting half the value of ingredients.

Edge of Insanity, on the other hand, increased the volume in it’s endurance blend from ~6.2 grams to ~11.2 grams. The energy focus blend is now split into two different blends but add up to ~1,449mg of active ingredients compared to the previous ~1,169mg. Despite the increase in ingredients, the servings per container for Edge of Insanity is less than the previous formula (25 servings compared to 30 servings).

In this formula, there are 5 ingredients shared between both products:

Comparison

In this formula, there are only two ingredients that are different from the previous formula, GABA and DiCaffeine Malate. GABA is a non-proteinogenic amino acid and is one of the main inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain. Similar to Phenibut and Kanna, GABA is well known for it’s stress-reducing and sleep enhancing effects. (32) However, it also is associated with perceptual and attentional functioning. (33)

Infinergy™ is a buffered version of caffeine that has an extended half life. The benefit with this ingredient is that the energizing effects may last longer and there is less of a “crash” when the stimulant wears off.†  However, more research is needed on this ingredient’s affects.

Different ingredients in Edge of Insanity 2021:

In Edge of Insanity, we can see there was a substitution of the Glycerpump and Agmatine Sulfate for L-Citrulline Malate. Where L- Citrulline Malate is a common and effective ingredient for increasing blood flow to muscles via vasodilation. (34)

Section Divider:

What To Expect

With so many ingredients shared between these products, you can image there would be similar effects. But there are some key differences, like the addition of the endurance, vascularity, and pump blend are going to promote those pre workout features in Edge of Insanity. These include the buffering away of lactic acid and increasing blood flow, which can help promote an increase in endurance and better pumps.

Far Beyond Driven, on the other hand, is a great option for energy and the other fat burning properties. With the addition of GABA to both formulas, its difficult to say if the effectiveness of the stimulants are dampened. However, anecdotal feedback indicates the GABA may support a steady “climb” and “fall” of energy.

While individual experiences will vary, we believe both products provide a good formula for individuals who prefer more stimulants in their supplements without being overstimulated. Because bother products have over 200mg of caffeine per serving, we would recommend individuals with a low tolerance to stimulants to assess their tolerance before diving into a full scoop or 2 caps.
