Wheres the beef?

Beef protein powder is of the newest forms of protein supplements available for athletes and fitness enthusiasts. It’s a protein derived from processed beef. Many of us are confused over the benefits beef protein has to offer and the advantage over whey protein supplements which are more commonly used. Is beef protein right for you? We’ll go over the pros and cons over whey protein.

Beef Protein Pros

Recovery: It’s still protein and will help with muscle recovery. But different protein sources have different amino acid profiles. Each amino acid has it’s own specific role in the body. This is one reason why it is important to eat a well balanced diet.

No Milk Ingredients: Since beef protein is not derived from milk, it does not contain any lactose which is beneficial to those who are lactose intolerant.  Also, if you happen to be allergic to whey or milk products, this can serve as an alternative and viable source of protein.

 Cons

Taste: Beef protein powder typically isn’t known for outstanding taste compared to some whey products. However, good tasting beef powders do exist (Carnivor Beef Protein).

Mixability: Another complaint is mixability. If you typically mix your shakes in a blender, this will not be an issue. Otherwise, be prepared to give a few extra shakes with your shaker cup to break up as many protein chunks you can.

Lack of Research: There isn’t much research going on with beef protein powder but then again this is a pretty new supplement. There will likely be more studies published in the near future.

Absorption: Beef protein has a lower biological value (~60) compared to whey protein (104). Biological value is a measure of how well a protein is absorbed into the body. Whey protein has the highest BV than any other source followed by egg protein in 2nd place.

Whey Protein Pros

Digestion and Absorption:This is the fastest digesting and best digesting protein source available. With a BV of 104, whey protein is absorbed into the body the best compared to other sources of protein.

Taste: Manufacturers have improved whey protein products since they first came out. Whey protein powders today are delicious and can be a treat you look forward to.

Mixability: This varies product to product but in general, you can mix a whey protein shake in a shaker cup with ease.

Whey Protein Cons

Derived from Milk: Whey protein is derived from milk. If you are allergic to milk you will need to find another protein source.  If you’re lactose intolerant, you will need to try whey protein isolate or different protein source as well.

Cost: Whey protein can be expensive.
